Although many good general ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons can
perform blepharoplasty, I highly recommend that you consider utilizing
a surgeon who has a sub-speciality in ocular plastics.

It appears to me that I said what I wanted to say precisely as I
desired to say it with enough simplicity and complexity to clearly
articulate my concerns and meanings without an anti-refractive
surgery/surgeon/industry zealot attempting to put words in my mouth or
respond as if I had said something else.

Thanks so much for the helpful info regarding wearing soft contacts.
I'm thinking of having my upper eyelids reduced in fat. I believe the
procedure is blepharoplasty. My dad has heavy upper eyelids and it
seems I've inherited this trait.

Thanks again.

So, Glenn, what you are saying is that because you consider the
chances so utterly remote, this patient should not investigate the
possibility of the surgeon using a bandage contact lens to avoid
causing an abrasion during the surgery? How much does a bandage lens
cost, and how long does it take to insert one to avoid DLK altogether?

Most ocular plastic surgeons don't do a next day followup, so if DLK
does occur, serious damage could occur before the patient returns for
the first post-op check.

Although Keller's scenario is possible, what is undoubtedly more
important to you is just how probable DLK
(http://www.complicatedeyes.org/dlk.htm) would occur due to a corneal
abrasion due to eyelid surgery after LASIK. The term, "not likely"
comes to mind, but ask your potential surgeon nonetheless. Don't be
surprised if your surgeon asks you where you came up with an idea like
that.

Laura,

Corneal abrasions are a known possible complication of eyelid surgery,
so be sure to ask a prospective surgeon about the possibility of
wearing a soft contact lens as he operates. Abrasions post-lasik can
lead to DLK or diffuse lamellar keratitis, and even though if caught
early it can be treated with steroids, it's best to avoid it all
together to avoid any sort of damage to your cornea.

Why do you need surgery on your eyelid(s)?

My rule of thumb would be to ask a qualified doctor.

Anytime after your vision and ocular health has stabilized after your
LASIK surgery should be fine.

Default Eyelid Surgery after Lasik

Does anyone have a rule of thumb as to when it is safe to have upper
eyelid surgery after a successful lasik surgery?
